Check Costing Variants for Process Orders

For process orders you must normally create two costing variants.

The costing variant for the planned costs determines:

The costing variant forms the link between the application and Customizing, since all cost estimates are carried out and saved with reference to a costing variant. Costing variants are proposed through the order type and the plant and can be changed in the order header.

A costing variant includes the following:

For process orders, the standard system contains costing type 06 for the planned costs and costing type 07 for the actual costs. These costing types cannot be changed.
The valuation variant contains strategy sequences for the selection of a price in the material master record and activity prices in Cost Center Accounting. The strategy sequence for the material prices only plays a role in preliminary costing (planned costs).

Although it is technically possible to have two costing variants with the same costing type and valuation variant, this should be avoided to prevent data from being overwritten.

The reason for this is that the key structure for the costing results in the database uses the costing type and the valuation variant, rather than the costing variant.

Standard settings

The standard system provides two predefined costing variants:

This costing variant consists of costing type 06 and valuation variant 006. The costing sheet PP-PC1 for the calculation of overhead is proposed through this valuation variant.
This costing variant consists of costing type 07 and valuation variant 007. Only the strategy sequence for the internal activities plays a role with this valuation variant.

SAP recommendation

You should assign a different valuation variant to each costing variant with which you intend to save cost estimates.

This one-to-one assignment enables you to change the valuation strategies later as required.

Check whether the costing variants provided in the standard system meet your requirements.

Should you need any further costing variants, proceed as follows:

1. Enter an alphanumerical key and a name for the costing variant.
2. Assign a costing type and a valuation variant to the costing variant.
If you want to use your own parameters, you must carry out the step Check valuation variants for process orders .
3. Assign the costing variant to the corresponding order type by processing the step Define default values for order types .

Further notes

The strategy sequence for the material prices only plays a role in preliminary costing (planned costs).
