A conversation is a temporary connection between two transaction programs.

SNA defines two types of conversations:

In basic conversation the transaction program processes and interprets data with a format defined by LU6.2. Machine-oriented programs should use basic conversation.

In a mapped conversation the protocol LU6.2 takes over the formatting of the data. On the recipient side, LU6.2 removes the formatting and transmits the unformatted data to the transaction program. Application programs should use mapped conversation.

The SAP-CPI-C interfaces use mapped conversation.
