Application Server

Definition

In the R/3 System the application server provides one of the two types of SAP utility (also see "SAP Server").
The following utilities belong to this type:

D: Dialog

V: Update

E: SAP lock management (enqueue)

B: Background processing (batch)

S: Print formatting (spool)

The application server consists of a dispatcher and one or more work processes for each of the individual utilities. The dispatcher administrates processing requests. Work processes execute these requests.

Each application server provides at least one dialog utility. It can provide more utilities (optional).

They may only be one application server with the SAP lock management utility.
