Cataloging the Databases to be Administered

Prerequisites

Before you can start using the DB2admin utilities, you have to catalog the databases to be administered. To do so, carry out the following steps on the machine to be used for administration.

Procedure

Logging On

  1. Log on to the computer on which the administration tools are installed as user db2<sapsid> (if it is the database server) or db2admin (if it is a remote computer).
  2. Set environment variable DB2DB6_R3DBPATH to directory <DB2HOME>\bin for all users who use the DB2admin utilities.
  3. To open the DB2 Control Center, choose Start ® Programs ® DB2 for Windows NT ® Administration Tools ® Control Center.
  4. The following screen is displayed:

    Cataloging Systems

  5. Select System on the left half of the screen.
  6. A context-sensitive menu is displayed.

  7. Choose Add.
  8. The following dialog box is displayed.

  9. Select Refresh.
  10. After approximately 1 minute, a list of the systems on which DB2 databases with Version 5 run. (If this does not happen, refer to the troubleshooting assistance below.)

  11. Select the first of the systems you wish to be able to administer and choose Apply.
  12. Repeat this for each of the systems you wish to administer.
  13. After you have selected all the systems you want to administer, exit the dialog box by selecting Close.
  14. The cataloging procedure creates a tree structure that is displayed on the left of the screen.

  15. To expand the tree structure, click on the + character.

Cataloging Instances

  1. To create a context-senstive menu for cataloging the instances of the database server, click with the right mouse button on the text Instances underneath the name of the system you want to administer.
  2. Choose Add.
  3. The Add Instance dialog box is displayed.

  4. Choose Refresh.
  5. The DB2 Control Center finds all available instances and displays them in the field Remote instance.

  6. Choose an instance you wish to administer.
  7. Choose Apply.
  8. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each of the instances you wish to administer.
  9. After choosing all the instances you wish to administer, exit the dialog box by selecting Close.
  10. The tree strucure has been extended by the cataloging procedure.

  11. Expand the tree structure further by clicking on the + character.

Cataloging Databases

  1. Select Databases underneath the system you wish to administer.
  2. Choose Add.
  3. The Add Database dialog box is displayed.

  4. Choose Refresh.
  5. The DB2 Control Center finds all available instances of the database server.

  6. Choose an instance you wish to administer in the field Database name.
  7. Choose Apply.
  8. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each of the instances you wish to administer.
  9. After choosing all the instances you wish to administer, exit the dialog box by selecting Close.

Result

This concludes the cataloging of the instances and databases to be administered.
